ULYSSES European Odyssey 2022-2024 (www.ulysseseurope.eu) is the most ambitious – largest and longest – celebratory response in 100 years to James Joyce’s epic novel, Ulysses, since its publication in 1922. Conceived in 2019 by Arts Over Borders Ireland’s Artistic Directors Seán Doran and Liam Browne (DoranBrowne) and developed with UEO Lead Partner Brave New World Producties (Claudia Woolgar), the project received funding of €1.7m from the European Commission’s Creative Europe Fund in 2022 and has coursed its way through 15 European cities since September 2022 – Athens, Budapest, Trieste, Marseille, Vilnius, Paris, Berlin, Lugo, Copenhagen, Istanbul, Cluj, Zürich, Leeuwarden, Eleusis, Oulu and Lisbon early June 2024 – to finally return to Ireland, Dublin (ROI) and Derry ~ Donegal (NI/ROI).

James Joyce’s epic novel has undergone a transformational zig-zagging journey across Europe through a range of highly innovative artistic responses from European museums, festivals and theatres of 15 city public events, 18 new writer commissions, 30 emerging artist residencies and 309 questions from communities across the length and breadth of Europe on 18 socio-political themes. Now all of this collectively is finally being returned to Ireland in June 2024: June 7-9 with Homesweethome? Festival at the Museum of Literature Ireland alongside the Dublin Grand Arts & Society Symposium (GASS) in the Long Room Trinity College Dublin (June 11-13) and as a grand finale with YES 2024 in Derry ~ Donegal June 13-16.

RoUTE 18

The Return of Ulysses Trail Exhibition in Derry~Londonderry will comprise 18 venue locations across the city centre, from the Brandywell Showground in the west of the city to Ebrington Square at the end of the Peace Bridge. Each of the Derry~Londonderry venues and locations will host one of the ULYSSES European Odyssey cities project exhibitions that offers the most comprehensive and unique insight to the 18 city 2-year journey ULYSSES European Odyssey 2022-2024 project. In each of the venue locations will be exhibits from one of the European city UEO projects accompanied by video footage, photographs, publications, the first revealing of each city writer’s composition and each city’s c.17 questions that will make up the publication: ‘What will you Answer? 309 Questions from Europe’.

RoUTE 18 is a bespoke ULYSSES European Odyssey exhibition trail free to the public across 8 days. RoUTE 18 brings together the UEO project that has taken place across Europe into a single concentration hosted by 18 Derry~Londonderry locations empathetic each of the 18 designated European city themes.

Access will be free. A map will be printed digitally and available at Visit Derry Centre from June 1, 2024. Visitors can choose locations in any order, as few or as many per day, or spread across a number of days.
